While traveling extensively throughout Massachusetts (1920–1936) in search of quaint old buildings and architectural evidence from colonial times, Howard Phillips Lovecraft recorded many of his experiences in letters, essays, and travel journals, allowing the attentive reader to trace a fascinating connection between real landscapes and buildings and the area created by the writer’s imagination along the Miskatonic River: Kingsport, Dunwich, Innsmouth and Arkham. Somewhere on the gloomy horizon they merge. However, it is Providence, where the author conceived and wrote all this, will forever remain a transition zone between reality and fiction. The stories collected in this book provide a wonderful insight into both the urban and rural areas from which Howard Phillips Lovecraft formed his otherworldly New England.
