“Tales of the Purring Cat” were written under the influence of “The Complete Collection of Fairy Tales” by G.-H. Andersen, published in the mid-60s and had great success in Russia. Wagner recalled that he considered many of Andersen’s fairy tales weak and wondered whether he could write the same or better. Wagner’s fairy tales have many similarities with Andersen’s works: plot similarities, a reflection of the Enlightenment belief in the priority of reason, philosophical and didactic overtones, sentimental and religious motives.
