“The Golden Volcano” (1899) - one of the last works of J. Verne, appeared simultaneously with the first stories of J. London. Inspired by the “gold rush” that swept America at that time, it was supposed to become a book of warning for Michel Verne, the beloved son of the novelist, a talented young man with a difficult character. The action-packed novel “The Lighthouse at the End of the World” (1897-1901) is about the unsuccessful an attempt by robbers who committed bloody crimes to evade retribution and leave the island of the States, on the real-life lighthouse of which the events described unfold. J. Verne’s early story “The Comte de Chantelain” takes the reader back to the time of the French Revolution and reflects the political views of the author, who sympathized with the rebellion in Vendee.
