The novel “Drinkers of the Wind” combines elements of different genres. It is a family drama, a western, and a noir at the same time. As if in an avant-garde film, characters flash before us: an oppressive father and a fanatically religious mother; the city leader, tyrant and paranoid Joyce; his minions are the dwarf Snake and the giant Double, as well as whale hunters, veterans of the First World War, pirates, poachers and girls of not at all exemplary behavior. But above all, this is a parable about all-conquering love that binds three brothers and a sister: the rebellious and sensual Mabel, the literary-obsessed Mark, the tree- and animal-speaking Mathieu, and the younger Luke, who imagines himself as Jim Hawkins from Stevenson's Treasure Island.
