None of the people who went down in history in the last quarter of the 18th century enjoyed such enormous popularity in Europe as Count Cagliostro. His busts adorned every French house; all of Paris, the center of European enlightened thought, read the inscription under his bust “The Divine Cagliostro” with reverent prayerful awe. He tried to make gold and performed miraculous cures, predicted the Great French Revolution of 1789 and the fall of the Bastille.
