The book by Jan Karski, the legendary courier of the Polish anti-Hitler Resistance, was first published in 1944 and shocked the world. This is a unique testimony of a participant in the events that took place in occupied Poland, divided between Germany and the USSR under the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. Mobilized on August 24, 1939, young lieutenant Jan Kozelewski (Karski was his underground pseudonym) first experienced the horror of defeat by the Germans and then found himself in Soviet captivity. Having miraculously escaped Katyn, he returned to Warsaw and began working underground. He was the first to bring the news of the mass extermination of Jews by the Nazis to the Allies and the Polish government in London. However, not everyone wanted to hear it...Awarded during the war years with the Cross of the Brave and twice with the Order of Military Valor, Karski did not accept the pro-Soviet regime in Poland and remained to live in the USA. Only in 1995 was he recognized as a hero in his homeland and received the Order of the White Eagle from the hands of Lech Walesa. And in 2012, Jan Karski, an honorary doctorate from several universities who was named Righteous Among the Nations by Israel, was posthumously awarded the highest honor awarded to civilians in the United States, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
