This play, created “four hands” by two authors, is one of the most successful French comedies of the last 25 years. Written at the very beginning of the 90s, the comedy was performed thousands of times in various theaters, and one of the latest productions, at the Fontaine Theater, was awarded the highest theatrical award in France, the Moliere Prize, as the best comedy performance in 2011. “Tea with mint or with lemon" is an exemplary example of "theater within a theater." We first see the troupe rehearsing a few days before the opening night for a late 19th century pulp play featuring a gentleman robber about to rob an aristocratic family. In this “play within a play” there is a thief, a lover, a cuckolded husband, a servant - a classic set. But we also see a theater troupe whose relationships are so electrified that sparks fly (literally!), but the performance is still completely unfinished. Then we watch the “premiere” - which surpasses the rehearsal in terms of absurdity, gags and blunders. French critics warn that you need to have handkerchiefs ready for this performance, because the audience is crying with laughter, and the laughter builds in this comedy to a crescendo, until the very end.
