Jean de Berg and Jeanne de Berg are the pseudonyms of Catherine Robbe-Grillet, the wife of the famous French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet. She made her debut in 1956 with the novel “The Image,” the foreword to which was written by Alain Robbe-Grillet under the pseudonym P.R. The glorification of sadomasochism in the book caused a scandal, but the novel was highly praised by Vladimir Nabokov, Henry Miller and Pauline Réage. A bestseller, translated into several languages, “The Image” was brilliantly filmed by American director Redley Metzger. In the book "Women's Ceremonies" (1985), Jeanne de Berg talks about secret sex clubs in New York and Paris. In the essay “Interview with Jeanne de Berg” (2001), Catherine Robbe-Grillet takes off her mask and describes her home sadomasochistic theater, which was visited by Parisian sensualists who risked making their most secret and most vicious dreams come true.
