The true revolutionaries of the genre can be counted on one hand, and the author, who published under the pseudonym James Tiptree Jr., is certainly one of them. The “new wave” was already in full swing, the newcomers-prodigies Roger Zelazny and Ursula Le Guin had already reaped the harvest of the main science fiction awards, but Tiptree immediately stood out even against such a bright background. His novels and short stories - which received a total of two Hugo Awards and three Nebula Awards, and were nominated for various genre awards more than forty times - were distinguished, for all their plot diversity, by a unique authorial voice, characteristic grotesque humor, and a break with the usual genre patterns. At the same time, James did not appear in public and received awards by mail, but he maintained an active correspondence, both with his colleagues (Philip K. Dick, Ursula Le Guin, Harlan Ellison), and with journalists and fans. From this correspondence, as well as from the author’s frequent fascination with the motives of paranoia, espionage, and persecution delusions, the image of an elderly intelligence service veteran was built, transforming his difficult life experiences into uniquely disturbing fantasies. And, as it turned out later, all this is true, with only one amendment: under the pseudonym James Tiptree Jr. was hiding a woman with an amazing biography, Alice Sheldon. In the ten years that have passed from Tiptree's debut to the scandalous revelation of the pseudonym, a body of work has been created that has no analogues both in the genre and far beyond its borders - and is not at all outdated. And the award, awarded annually for the best science fiction novel devoted to the problem of relations between the sexes and gender identification, was named after Tiptree. So, we present to your attention a collection of the best works of a modern classic. Most of the works included in this book have been translated for the first time.
