At the height of the First World War, an event occurred in Germany that left a noticeable mark on the history of underwater shipbuilding and navigation. On June 23, 1916, the submarine Deutschland, first created for transport purposes, left Kiel harbor. The boat was commanded by one of the most experienced captains of the German merchant fleet, Paul Koenig. Having cargo and diplomatic mail on board, the Deutschland headed for the North Sea to cross the Atlantic Ocean and arrive in the North American United States. So Germany tried to prove to the whole world and first of all to England about the ineffectiveness of the blockade it carried out. Having experienced severe storms more than once, overcoming all difficulties, the Deutschland crossed the ocean and reno entered the American port of Baltimore on the morning of July 9, 1916.
