This man had several names. At different times he was known as Yushka Otrepyev, then as the monk Grigory, then as the Tsarevich, and then the Tsar and Grand Duke Dmitry Ivanovich, the son and heir of Ivan the Terrible, then as “Stripped” and “Impostor”, deprived of even a name and cast out from peace. The chronicles report his death at least three times, and each time this death entailed troubles and upheavals for the Moscow state. Having no chance of even approaching the heights of power, he eventually took the throne of the Moscow sovereigns and was crowned and anointed king by the Orthodox hierarchs in compliance with all sacred rites. What happened to him has no precedent in Russian history. Some saw in him a fiend of hell, others saw him as a reformer who almost anticipated Peter’s future reforms. So who was this man and what was hidden in his short stay on the throne? The famous historian Vyacheslav Nikolaevich Kozlyakov, a regular author of the “Life of Remarkable People” series, talks about this in his new book.
