"It is difficult to find a more mysterious heroine in history than Joan of Arc. Everything here is a mystery and a hoax, sometimes turning into outright falsification. Starting from the name that no one called her during her lifetime, to her death at the stake, which is disputed by serious researchers. There are even doubts about her gender. We only have no doubt that Jeanne the Virgin really existed. Everything else is lies and lies in the service of high politics." This is how many modern publications about the Maid of Orleans, published under the loud name “historical research,” begin in a dashing and spectacular manner. There are enough of them on the Russian-language Internet, and although such “sensations” are not taken seriously by official science, their influence on minds cannot be underestimated, since they are read, approved and disseminated by many. Slanderous attacks on the image of Jeanne the Virgin can be called a particular manifestation of a real epidemic of discrediting great names, which in our time is spreading across the planet. All these “revelations” are distinguished by a common feature - the standards of pygmies are applied to the giants, the great is relegated to the level of ordinary people, careerists and intriguers. The presented work is an attempt to understand this phenomenon, to check the reliability and validity of the slanderers’ fabrications.
