The action of the novel “The Rich Are So Different” covers two decades separating the First and Second World Wars. By the will of the author, one or the other character takes center stage, but two heroes remain central throughout the entire narrative - the P. C. Van Zale and Company Bank, based on Wall Street, and the ancient British estate of Mallingham. And the fates of the remaining heroes are determined either by the desire to take a position in the Bank, or by the desire to free themselves from cynical pragmatism, to regain their own “I” - youth, faith, the ability to love - everything that the days and years spent in Mallingham gave them.
