Fields of Honor (1990) is the first novel by the famous French writer Jean Rouault. The boy, the hero of the novel, unwinds a tangle of family memories back to the event that opens the history of the 20th century - the First World War. Having reached the end of the book, the reader discovers a catch: there is no hero in this seemingly biography. The one with whose inner world we became accustomed and through whose eyes we looked, never appeared.
