“A Journey to the Holy Land in 1835” by Abraham Sergeevich Norov is one of the most popular works of the 19th century in Russia. Even today, almost 170 years after the appearance of the first edition (1838), it retains both its literary appeal and its scientific significance. “The Journey” is a comprehensive source for the study of pilgrimage and the Orthodox East, but also the author’s own deep scientific study of biblical and Christian history, archaeology, ethnography, monuments of art and architecture of the Holy Land. This book is based on the first edition of 1838. The text is given in accordance with the norms of modern spelling and punctuation, but it preserves the lexical and orthographic features of the author’s language, topographical and geographical names, unifies references to the Holy Scriptures, and expands the bibliography. The book is illustrated with original pages of A. S. Norov’s manuscript with his drawings. Engravings and plans from the 1838 edition are collected in two separate sections and are published along with explanations by the author.
