Dmitry Antonovich Skalon (1840–1919) military historian and memoirist, adjutant of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder, who accompanied him on numerous official trips and travels around Russia and the world. In 1872 he took part in the Grand Duke's long trip to Turkey, Syria, Palestine and Egypt. His book about this journey is essentially a travel diary prepared for publication, containing both purely personal observations and impressions, and detailed descriptions of the official activities of the Grand Duke during the trip. The book contains a description of many meetings of the Grand Duke: with Sultan Abdulaziz, Patriarch Kirill of Jerusalem, and prominent dignitaries of the Ottoman Empire. Nikolai Nikolaevich's companions were the princes of Oldenburg Alexander Petrovich and Konstantin Petrovich, Count G. A. Stroganov, generals D. I. Skobelev, M. N. Dokhturov, V. N. Sipyagin, A. A. Gall and others. All of them after five years after this journey they took an active part in the hostilities of the Russian army in the Balkans under the command of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich the Elder. This trip undoubtedly had military and political significance, but in Palestine it acquired the clear meaning of a pilgrimage to the Holy Sepulcher. In the new edition of the book, the spelling of lowercase and uppercase letters in titles, titles, etc. is preserved and unified in accordance with the requirements of the norms of etiquette of the author’s time.< /p>
