This novel is dedicated to the thousands of Scottish Highlanders who lost their home, the centuries-old heritage of their ancestors, and often their very lives during the infamous times that went down in history as “The Highland Clearances” (“Clearing the Scottish Highlands[1]” or “Exile Scots").
The novel takes place in 1820, during the Regency era and is part of the “White Quartet” series (“White Magic”, “White Heather”, “White Mist”). Provincial and completely Lady Grace Lady, inexperienced in matters of love, enters into a marriage of convenience with Christian Wycliffe, a breathtakingly handsome aristocrat, who is being hunted in high society in the hope of wrapping up the heir to the Duke of Westover. However, one glance at her future husband was enough for Grace to understand how arrogant, cold, discourteous he is and clearly hides his dark past from everyone. Grace, an orphan who was raised by her grandmother who doted on her, can’t get comfortable in London’s high society , and even the strange behavior of the groom, becoming more and more depressing day by day, does not add joy. The plot twist, when Grace decides to escape to the Scottish Highlands in order to find peace of mind in the romantic “Skynigal Castle” - the ancestral domain of her grandmother, allows the author to acquaint readers with the dramatic pages of the history of Scotland, called “The Expulsion of the Scots”. It should be noted that, Despite the undoubted literary talent and wonderful style of Jacqueline Reading, even the most enthusiastic fans of her novels may find this work somewhat gloomy and depressing. Wycliffe's harsh psychological bullying towards Grace is very unpleasant, since the outbursts of his violent temperament and sudden mood swings arise literally out of nowhere. So readers should come to terms with the fact that this hero is definitely not the gallant knight in shining armor that is so characteristic of novels describing the brilliant era of the Regency.
