HERODOTUS: 485 - approx. 425 BC e., Greek historian. Born in Halicarnassus, a Greek city in Caria founded by the Dorians, which in the mid-5th century. BC e. was subjected to strong Ionian influence. Herodotus is the author of the book that laid the foundation for historiographical science. The importance of his “History” as a source of our knowledge about the ancient world cannot be overestimated. The book contains a lot of geographical, ethnographic, natural-historical and literary information about the Persian kingdom, Egypt, Scythia, as well as other kingdoms and lands in which the culture of the Western world found its birth and meaning.
