Walter Scott (1771–1832) was an English poet, novelist, and historian. Scottish by origin. The creator and master of the genre of historical novel, in which he managed to merge major historical events and the private lives of the characters. With extraordinary vividness and colorfulness, Scott depicted the historical past from the Middle Ages to the end of the 18th century, resurrecting the setting, life and customs of bygone times. From his pen, bright, lively, multidimensional and original characters emerged not only from real historical characters, but also from fictional ones. For services to his country, Scott was given the title of baronet in 1820. This volume presents two works by W. Scott, part of a series called by the author “The Innkeeper's Tales.” The action of the novel “Black Dwarf” takes place in 1707 during the Jacobite uprising - supporters of the English king James II Stuart, who was exiled after the events of 1688. The novel The Legend of Montrose tells the story of the Earl of Montrose's rebellion in 1645 and the Scottish Highlanders' struggle for independence from foreign English rule.
