A story of friendship and loyalty told from the perspective of a horse. After Albert's father sells Joey, his son's favorite horse, to the British cavalry to pay off his debts, the boy decides to find the friend with whom he and grew up and went to the front. The piercing note in the story is pity for all living things, faith in the best in man. The author invites the reader to look at the war through the eyes of a horse, a creature selflessly devoted to man, to feel the absurdity of war, responsibility to “our little brothers.”
