He began his diary in September 1941, at a time when German troops were approaching Moscow. Day after day, Keeler cared for the wounded, witnessing bloody wounds, death, disease and hunger. A peaceful man at heart, he is increasingly imbued with disgust for war, for how it destroys the soul and life of those who, one way or another, are drawn into it.
