India, late 1980s. Mukta is still very young, but she has almost reached the age when she must undergo the ritual, devote herself to the goddess Yellamma, as all the women in her family did, and become a temple prostitute, a delight for men. In an attempt to escape his fate, Mukta finds himself in Bombay, in the service of a prosperous family. Not only does she have security in her new life, but she also has Tara, a friend and sworn sister who introduces her to an unknown world: ice cream and poetry, midnight conversations and books. But one fateful night, Mukta is kidnapped...2000s. More than ten years have passed since Mukta disappeared. Tara has been living in America for a long time, but the memories won’t let her go; she blames herself for what happened. Every day she lives is tinged with sadness. And one day she decides to return to India to find Mukta, understand the secrets of her family and atone for her long-ago deed. The emotional, dramatic and optimistic story of two girls evokes the famous novel by Khaled Hosseini “The Kite Runner”. It seems that the fates of Mukta and Tara are predetermined by centuries-old traditions and the social gap between them, but friendship, love and the desire to atone help them maintain hope and overcome the impossible.
