The book includes recordings of lectures given by V.E. Meyerhold in 1918-1919. in educational institutions created by him in Petrograd. These texts, with a few exceptions previously unpublished, present positions that, since the mid-1910s, determined the direction of Meyerhold's studio research and his pedagogy. Meyerhold justified the principle of grotesque theater of conventional simplified forms to listeners as a practical and theoretical conclusion from the entire past history of world theater and as a direct consequence of the latest discoveries of modern directing.
