A talented young writer, Englishwoman Prudence, shocked by the betrayal of her loved one, falls ill with a nervous disorder. Doctors advise her to unwind in a remote secluded place, far from civilization, far from her hometown of Eastbourne. Together with her energetic, smart and kind Aunt Maggie, she finds a truly paradise on earth in the ancient county of Rogers Cross. Both ladies, young and old, settled on the Lauterbeck estate, which belonged to the blond, blue-eyed giant, Davy McVey. Untouched pristine nature, serene peace, privacy from the bustle world turned out to be deceptive. Prudence finds herself in a devilish whirlwind of events and becomes their involuntary participant. Step by step, with the help of the cunning Aunt Maggie, who seems to have stepped out of the pages of an Agatha Christie novel, Prudence approaches the mystery of the drama that played out in Rogers Cross. Other people's pain and suffering (mainly the courageous Davy McVeigh) drown out Prudence's own experiences. Both she and Davy McVeigh overcome the feeling of Fear - an obsession that tormented both. Prudence regains her faith in life and love.
