The hero of the novel by the English writer Bernice Rubens (1928–2004), Alfred Dreyfus, hid all his life that he was a Jew, and achieved heights in his field in no small part thanks to this. And at the peak of his career, Dreyfus - and he is already the head of one of the most prestigious schools, awarded a knighthood - is accused of infanticide. And all the evidence is against him. Like his famous namesake Alfred Dreyfus (it was no coincidence that B. Rubens named her hero that way), a hundred years later he becomes a victim of anti-Semitism. All stages of the trial and the progress of the investigation undertaken by the lawyer to prove Dreyfus's innocence cannot be read without excitement.
