The book “The Pipe and Other Labyrinths” includes two stories by the famous contemporary writer Valery Khazin. Both works were nominated for a prize named after them at different times. I. P. Belkin “for the best Russian-language story” (“Telegon Catalogs” in 2004, “Trumpet” in 2009). “Trumpet and Other Labyrinths” is high-quality intellectual prose, which is characterized by genre diversity - from mythological narratives to mystical parables - and the author’s refined sense of style. “The Trumpet” is an instructive and original parody of “treasure tales” and adventure novels. The story tells about an unexpected discovery of three residents of the Russian outback, which completely changed their lives. In the basement of their own panel house they discover an oil pipe. The lucky ones decide to take advantage of the “treasure”, but easy enrichment is followed by a series of tragic and farcical events caused by human stupidity, greed and carelessness. The story “Telegon’s Catalogs” is a kind of cycle of “restored myths” associated with the Trojan cycle, the Argonauts and Tauromachy. The plots of well-known myths coexist in the story with myths that are not only little-known, but also almost esoteric, and sometimes simply fictitious.
