On June 22, 1941, the Red Army won its first victory in the Great Patriotic War - the assault on the Brest Fortress, which the German command took a few hours to capture, ended in complete failure and heavy losses of the 45th division of the Wehrmacht. Despite the suddenness of the attack and the loss of command and control at the very beginning of the battle, the Red Army soldiers demonstrated miracles of spontaneous self-organization, putting up desperate resistance to the enemy. It took the Germans more than a week to break it, but separate groups of defenders held out until the end of July, and the last fighters continued to fight until the autumn of 1941. This is how the legend of the "immortal garrison" was born...Soviet documents about the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress, for obvious reasons, have not been preserved, however, in recent years, German military archives have become available to domestic researchers, in which the history of the assault is reflected in great detail and upon which this book is based. This is a look at the battle for the Brest Fortress from the German side: from the command post of the 45th division, from the combat formations of the advancing infantry, through the sights of MO-34 machine guns and heavy siege weapons. This is the true story of the assault, which was the first shock for the German soldiers and the immortal feat of the Red Army and border guards.
