Evagrius of Pontus (c. 345 - 399) is an outstanding theologian, one of the first Christian writers who created mainly ascetic works. Disciple of St. Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian, he chose the path of monastic asceticism, being spiritually nourished by such great ascetics as St. Macarius of Egypt and St. Macarius of Alexandria. After the Fifth Ecumenical Council, Evagrius was mistakenly classified as an Origenist and fell under anathema. However, his works continued to be read, and some of them were included in the Russian translation of the Philokalia. Many of the works included in this edition are being published for the first time.
