Alonzo “Al” Jennings (b. 1863 in Virginia) is a man with the most vivid biography in the American spirit. He began his career as a lawyer. After killing his brothers Ed Jennings and John Jennings and being wounded in a shootout with rival lawyers, Jennings became the most notorious train robber in the United States. Jennings was sentenced to life imprisonment, but thanks to the efforts of his brother John, this sentence was reduced to five years. He served time in Sing Sing with the American writer O. Henry, who became his best friend. He was released in 1902 and received a presidential pardon in 1907. Jennings moved to Oklahoma City in 1911 and became active in politics. In 1912, he won the Democratic Party nomination for District Attorney in Oklahoma, but lost in the general election. In 1914, he ran for governor of Oklahoma. Jennings has always been open about his past and has won votes for his honesty. Among six Democratic candidates, he finished third behind James B. Robertson and Robert L. Williams. After retiring, Jennings moved to California and worked in the film industry making Westerns. He became a silent film star and appeared extensively in films as an actor and technical consultant. A biographical film about him was made in 1951, Al Jennings Oklahoma, starring Dan Duryea. He died in Tarzana, California on December 26, 1961 year.
