Cora Derwent is a scion of one of the noblest families in England, but she is unhappy: she is considered ugly, awkward and untalented. All of Cora's attempts to earn at least her parents' approval end in failure. The latter is especially sad when, due to her naivety, the Derwents lost their family diamonds. The illegitimate grandson of the Duke de Aisa, Rafael, owner of several vineyards in Spain, wants to buy another one, his grandfather Don Carlos. However, the arrogant aristocrat refuses to sell the land to the rootless upstart. A fictitious marriage to the daughter of British dukes may change his mind, and Cora, in order to pay for the lost diamonds, agrees to marry what she believes is an empty, heartless playboy. Gradually, young people get to know each other better, and their relationships change, but still everyone goes towards their goal, trying not to notice the feelings that flare up.
