Du Guesclin is one of the most famous representatives of medieval military art. Extremely ugly and endowed with extraordinary strength, he showed himself very early as a formidable fighter. The War of the Breton Succession and the Hundred Years' War provided this minor Breton nobleman with ideal conditions for displaying his talents as a military leader: for forty years he fought from Cherbourg to Seville and from Brest to Tarascona. Beginning as a simple guerrilla commander in the forest of Brocéliand, Du Guesclin made an impressive rise up the social ladder, becoming constable of France, advisor to princes and kings, and personal enemy of the Black Prince and King of Navarre, Charles the Evil. Loyal, skillful and brave, but at the same time cruel and ruthless, the constable has only one passion: war. Du Guesclin's role in military history is due to his ability to innovate, the ability to invent tricks, adapt to circumstances in order to surprise the enemy. He knew how to reconcile the customs of knightly warfare with the realism of mercenary warfare. Thus this indefatigable warrior rid France of turbulent mercenary bands, placed Enrique of Transtámara on the throne of Castile, and drove the English from almost all French territory. Georges Minois dusts off the semi-mythical image of Du Guesclin to reveal his personality and role in the history of France .The cover design uses a miniature by J. Fouquet from the “Grand French Chronicles” (15th century) depicting Charles V presenting the sword of the Constable of France to Bertrand Du Guesclin.
