Michael Gazzaniga is a famous American neuropsychologist, author of many popular science books, one of those who in the mid-20th century created bioethics, which studies the moral aspect of human activity in medicine and biology. In Consciousness as Instinct, he argues convincingly that consciousness is not some “thing” that can be found somewhere in the brain. Consciousness is born from a whole network of “modules” located in the brain, each of which contributes to our stream of consciousness. However, it is possible that the “stream of consciousness” is an illusion; it is possible that we perceive the rapid change in details of what is happening in the brain as something continuous, like frames of a film connected together.
