Viktor Karmazov, who dreams of becoming an artist, got a job as a cash collector. One of his clients gives him a notebook and asks him to display scenes from a detective story he wrote in it. Victor reads the manuscript, makes pencil sketches in a notebook and soon notices that the characters on the pages “come to life” and the plot changes. He soon finds out that the notebook also has other wonderful properties: with its help, Victor can “duplicate” people drawn by him anywhere, and gains the ability to be transported to his youth.
