After being demobilized from the army in 1946, Innes devoted himself entirely to writing the books that brought him fame. His novels have always been noted for their attention to detail. He began writing new books regularly, devoting six months of the year to travel and research, and the next six to working on novels. Innes's love of the sea and his experience as a sailor are reflected in many of his works. He and his wife sailed on their yachts Triune of Troy and Mary Deare. In the 1960s, the writer's productivity declined, but he continued to create new works, becoming interested in environmental problems. Hammond Innes wrote until his death. His latest novel is Delta Connection (1996). Unlike most other thrillers, Innes's characters are not "heroes" in the true sense of the word, they are ordinary people caught in difficult situations. Often they ended up in a place where it was difficult to survive (the Arctic, the open sea, deserts), or they became unwitting participants in some kind of military conflict or conspiracy. Often the main character can only rely on his wits and be content with a limited amount of resources.
