In the book “Self-Remembering” Robert Earl Burton explains and develops the most important position of the Fourth Way - one of the greatest esoteric traditions of the 20th century, founded by G. I. Gurdjieff and P. D. Ouspensky. Following the creators of the teaching, the author asserts that all ideas of the system revolve around one, self-remembering is the axis of the wheel, all the rest are spokes. And although self-remembering is a non-verbal process that is difficult to describe, the author speaks about it in an accessible language, quoting famous poets and even fairy tales familiar from childhood. Self-remembering is a multifaceted process, it is also the ability to constantly be present in the present (“remember yourself”), and divided attention (“you are what is observing, not what you are observing”). Similar ideas can be found in most spiritual traditions and religious teachings, but for the author this is not just a theory, it is a tool with which everyone can “wake up” to a different, authentic life. Many people live their entire lives, being focused on the future or the past , not realizing that “past” and “future” are nothing more than words. A person must “work” with what the present offers him, do not deceive himself - the next moment will not be better than this or more suitable. Everything except the present is an illusion. Our work is always now. We have nowhere to go except the present, for all roads lead to this living moment.
