The novel “Patron of Birds” by St. Petersburg resident Natalya Galkina (author of six prose and fourteen poetry books) is a kind of biography of the composer Boris Klyuzner. Chechulina. The text intertwines threads of documentary prose, fantasy, and magical realism; fictional characters and famous people meet on the streets of St. Petersburg; the Volga of the hero’s childhood flows its waters, the Fontanka with the Griboyedov Canal of the days of his youth, the Styx of the war years (through which the Klyuzner penal battalion built crossings and bridges), Komarov’s streams, hidden rivers. “Patron of Birds” closes the circle of Galkina’s works about the composer: readers are already familiar with the cycle of poems “Kluzneriana” (from the poetry book “Postcard from Khlynov”) and the poem “Home” (from “Party”).
