What should we do about claims from other groups that their morality is different from our own? Stephen Engle's book gives a detailed answer to this question. She combines a detailed account of the development of Chinese human rights discourse with a philosophical view of how other communities should respond to claims of uniqueness in Chinese conceptions of human rights. The study shows that Chinese ideas of human rights do have distinctive features, but nevertheless the author insists on the importance and promise of intercultural interaction.
