The Mahabharata is one of the most famous and probably the most important sacred scriptures of Ancient India; this epic includes the Bhagavad Gita, which in a condensed form conveys the essence of the entire work. The Gita is written in the form of a dialogue between the prince Arjuna and his charioteer Krishna, who is the Divine Incarnation, who reveals great spiritual truths to the prince. The Gita affirms a positive attitude towards the world and the universe and teaches action based on spiritual knowledge - Karma Yoga. Sri Aurobindo, denoting his attitude to this with the words “All life is Yoga,” certainly attached special significance to the book. He made his own translation of the Gita into English and wrote commentaries on it, which were later published as An Essay on the Gita. This volume contains the first part of this work. Sri Aurobindo, Pondicherry, 1915-1918
