Dortmunder and his friend Andy Kelp meet a man named Kuerk, and he offers to do a profitable business for them. Querk works in a printing house in a town a hundred miles north of New York and wants to carry out a “quiet” robbery of this very printing house, but so that no one will ever know about it. Dortmunder and Kelp “make inquiries” about Kuerk among their old acquaintances and come to the conclusion that he can be trusted.
