Geoffrey Thomas writes dark science fiction with a horror feel, much like Ray Bradbury during The Martian Chronicles. And just as the author of “The Martian Chronicles” creates a picture of the future in order to tell about the average American of the mid-20th century, so Thomas’s future is an occasion for analyzing the culture and society of the turn of the 20th–21st centuries, with their monstrously rapid changes and inhumane state policies and corporations, an epidemic of serial murders. Times have changed, and today Bradbury's universal humanism seems powerless in the face of the problems of the new century. And Jeffrey Thomas's ugly, miserable characters are more like our contemporaries than the beautiful Martians. Jeffrey Thomas created the world of Punktown in 1980, and has since used it as the setting for his numerous novels and short stories. His early stories were published in small publishers in the late 80s, but D. Thomas made a real breakthrough by publishing the collection of short stories “Punktown” in 2000, thereby arousing interest in his work and earning recognition among a wide range of readers. Since then, the collection has been noted more than once in literary circles: in particular, it was nominated for a Bram Stoker Award, received an excellent review in Publishers Weekly, and was also included in the list of the best books of the year in the Science Fiction and Horror genre. In recent years, D. Thomas has been living in two houses: one is his own, in Massachusetts, the other is in Bien Goa in Vietnam, the hometown of his wife, a wonderful exotic corner that provides rich food for the writer’s imagination.
