Vladislav Mikhailovich Glinka (1903–1983), a historian who worked for many years at the State Hermitage, author of a dozen books of scientific and fictional content, enjoyed unquestioned authority in the scientific community as an expert on the Russian 19th century. He survived the siege of Leningrad from the very beginning to the very end, working during this difficult time as a curator in the Hermitage, as a paramedic in a hospital, and at the same time being responsible for the preservation of the collections of the Institute of Lithuania of the USSR Academy of Sciences (“Pushkin House”). The manuscript of “Memories of the Siege” was discovered by the heirs of V. M. Glinka after the death of the author during the analysis of the archive. The scenes of life under siege presented in the book require neither explanation nor additions. The publication is illustrated with unique archival photographs.
