In the post-Soviet space, Lévi-Strauss's major works on mythology remain almost unknown to this day - first of all, the four-volume study of mythological thinking based on the culture of the Indians of South and North America - "Mythology" ("Mytiiologiques". Vol. 1-4 . P., 1964-1971) and subsequent books related to this cycle on material and issues - “The Way of Masks” (“La voie des masques”. T. 1-2, Geneve, 1975; expanded edition - P., 1979), “The Jealous Potter” (“La potiere jalouse”. P., 1985) and “The History of the Lynx” (“L`histoire de lynxe”. P., 1991). Our audience is also little familiar with Lévi-Strauss the culturologist, author of “Structural Anthropology - Two” (“Anthropologie structurale deux.” P., 1973) and “Views from afar” (“Le regard eloigne.” P., 1983). This publication, to a certain extent, fills this gap, expanding the understanding of the scientist’s cultural and scientific views and introducing into scientific circulation the Russian translation of two of his above-mentioned books on mythology, written in a period when the structural method was already fully established and, moreover, was tested by the twenty-year-old experience in the study of myths (in the 1950s-70s), the result of which was the cycle “Mythology”. This edition includes the works of the outstanding French ethnologist, member of the French Academy, creator of the structural-semiotic method of studying myths and beliefs, Claude Lévi-Strauss (b. 1908). The books “The Way of Masks” and “The Jealous Potter” were created in the late period of the scientist’s work, when his method and concept of mythological thinking had already gained maturity and transparency.
