The heroine of the book is an Indian girl, Karana, one of the entire tribe left on a small island off the Californian coast. Karana managed to establish a life in solitude, provide herself with food and safe shelter. The most important thing for Karana is her relationship with animals. For her, “animals and birds are the same people, only with their own language and their own manner of behavior. Without them, life in this world would be very dreary.” “The Island of Blue Dolphins” received the Newbery Medal in 1961, and the author himself was awarded the Hans Christian Andersen Gold Medal in 1972.
