The novel by contemporary French writer Jeanne Buren tells the story of one of the most famous and tragic episodes in the spiritual history of medieval Europe - the love of the great philosopher Pierre Abelard (1079–1142) and his student Heloise. Passion brought both “great lovers” not only the highest pleasure, but also countless suffering: Abelard, who had accepted the priestly rank, could not “wash away the sin of adultery,” and Heloise’s uncle, through his henchmen, subjected him to shameful emasculation. Eloise continued her life's journey in the monastery, but carried through all the trials her great love for her chosen one.
