No one knows how a dream is born, even if it is known for certain how it all began. The life of Robert Edwin Peary (1856-1920) did not stand still even before his quarter-century polar epic: he was born, studied, received an engineering degree in 1877, worked as a draftsman, was accepted into the Corps of Civil Engineers of the US Navy, in 1884— In 1885, he carried out survey work in Nicaragua. But one day, after reading about the Greenland ice sheet, Peary seemed to wake up. His life finally found meaning. Piri is considered the first person to reach the North Pole of the Earth. Why does it count? Because he may not have visited the very point of the pole. But even if, as is believed, the explorer did not reach the pole by as much as 8 kilometers, today this is no longer important. The important thing is that all of Peary’s polar expeditions (and there were eight of them in total!) are an irrefutable argument in defense of the statement: there are no barriers to human will. The path to the goal took almost 25 years and required sacrifices, so what? The hardships endured remain with a person - but glory, like the polar lights, illuminates his home, family, biography, homeland and the vast icy expanses that became accessible thanks to him. But still, fame is just a by-product of achievement. In preparation for his campaigns, Piri developed a special “Piri system” and brought back countless interesting observations from his travels, not counting the 30-ton Anigito meteorite—that’s what was left to people. He also wrote four books about his travels - each more fascinating than the other. Two of them are waiting to meet you. “Along the Great Ice to the North” are stories about life and exploration in the 1890s. in North Greenland, about the discovery and delivery of large Cape York meteorites to America, about the indigenous inhabitants of these places, the northernmost inhabitants of the world - the Eskimos. And “The North Pole” is a chronicle of a great feat (1909), a fascinating story about one of the last great geographical exploits of our time - about the full passion and hardships, successes and tragedies of the history of the conquest of the North Pole of the Earth. What did it cost, what did you have to go through? The harsh environment of the Earth's circumpolar regions, the difficulties of travel, the most difficult trials that befell the participants - all this is presented by the author with captivating sincerity and great attention to detail. The electronic publication includes all the texts of Edwin Peary's paper book and basic illustrative material. But for true connoisseurs of exclusive publications, we offer a gift classic book. Hundreds of carefully selected black-and-white and color illustrations provide a complete picture of what the pioneering hero saw and went through on the way to his goal. This edition, like all books in the Great Journeys series, is printed on beautiful offset paper and elegantly designed. Editions of the series will adorn any, even the most sophisticated library, and will be a wonderful gift for both young readers and discerning bibliophiles.
