In 1900, the young Russian correspondent Dmitry Yanchevetsky went to China to see the exotic country with his own eyes and describe the great uprising that shook the Celestial Empire. The rebels considered themselves “just people” and “sacred warriors”; they set the most noble goals for themselves: peace, justice, freedom, harmony, independence from foreign interference. But... very soon they became a sad confirmation of the well-known paradox: the nobler the goals of the revolution, the more terrible its consequences... And those who called themselves “yihetuan”, literally: “detachments of harmony and justice,” failed to achieve either harmony, justice, or peace , no consent. But only the killing of innocent people and blood - rivers of blood, and then betrayal and the natural end: even greater enslavement a huge country and its people... In the thick of all these events was the young correspondent of the newspaper “Novy Krai” Dmitry Yanchevetsky. He did not limit himself to travel notes - the result of his journey was the book “At the Walls of Motionless China.” The rave reviews from readers and experts were well deserved, and therefore the author, on the recommendation of the President of France, was elected a member of the French Academy of Literature. And his brother, who dreamed of becoming a writer, so as not to remain in the shadows, decided to take a pseudonym for himself, shortening his surname to the first two letters. But it so happened that the name of Vasily Yan, the author of wonderful historical novels, is known much more than the name of Dmitry Yanchevetsky. And the point here is not that one of the brothers is more talented. The fate of Dmitry Grigorievich was trampled under the steamroller of Stalinist repressions. He was arrested in 1927, sent to Solovki and died with the stigma of an “enemy of the people,” which meant oblivion of his books for many years... But, fortunately, not forever... The notes made by Dmitry Yanchevetsky during his dangerous journey formed the basis for an amazing a reliable, unique book that will open to the reader pictures of the collision of medieval and modern China, an event that became the starting point of the amazing transformations of the ancient country. The appendix publishes the brilliant book “In China” by Alexander Vereshchagin. The opinion of a professional military man about the events of the early 20th century is interesting primarily because in defeated, destroyed, divided, humiliated China, the author saw the emerging greatness of this country and for the first time in European history predicted its future power. Electronic publication includes all the texts of the paper book by D. G. Yanchevetsky and basic illustrative material. But for true connoisseurs of exclusive publications, we offer a gift classic book. Hundreds of color and black-and-white unique illustrations, photographs, maps and sketches from the scene of events allow you to visually leaf through the exotic and sometimes sinister pages of this tragic episode of Chinese history. This edition, like all books in the Great Journeys series, is printed on beautiful offset paper and elegantly designed. Editions of the series will adorn any, even the most sophisticated library, and will be a wonderful gift for both young readers and discerning bibliophiles.
