The name of Fyodor Petrovich Litke (1797-1882) rightfully occupies an honorable place in the history of the Russian fleet, Russian science and Russian culture. He was a famous navigator, admiral, major statesman, brilliant geographer, founder, organizer and long-term leader of the Russian Geographical Society, president of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The expeditions of Fyodor Petrovich Litke enriched domestic and world science with research into Novaya Zemlya, the Bering Sea, Kamchatka, the Caroline and Mariana Seas. archipelagos, Bonin Shima Islands. Unique for that time, geographical and hydrographic research and cartographic work, precise astronomical, magnetic and gravimetric observations and measurements made by him personally brought Litka world fame and raised the authority of Russian science. Suffice it to say that on the map of the World Ocean the name Litke appears eighteen times! The researcher’s reports on his travels were a huge success and were translated into many European languages. In addition to their geographical significance, they are distinguished by the extraordinary literary talent of the author. But of exceptional importance for the development and prosperity of Russian science was the foundation, on the initiative of F. P. Litke, of the Russian Geographical Society, which, under his many years of leadership, turned into an academy of geographical sciences with a worldwide reputation, has survived eras and delights us with discoveries to this day. Summing up his life path , Fyodor Petrovich wrote in his diary: “Perhaps not everything that I strive to plant will be pecked by birds or the evil one will steal it, perhaps another grain will find favorable soil, perhaps, looking at my portrait when I am gone, you will sometimes say: “This man He lived more for me than for himself...” There are no standard lives, everyone has their own path. Fyodor Petrovich Litke is no exception. He made mistakes, did not always achieve what he wanted, and was forced to submit to circumstances. But he lived a worthy life as a man of great honor and duty, a scientist who devoted himself to serving the Fatherland and people. And for the rest of his life he remained faithful to his first love - the Arctic. As Fyodor Petrovich himself wrote in his declining years, he had the opportunity to visit many corners of the globe, but his heart remained forever there - in the cold Arctic ice... The electronic publication of the book by F. P. Litke includes the full text of the paper book and part of the illustrative material. But for true connoisseurs of exclusive editions, we offer a gift classic book with an exceptional selection of more than 200 rare illustrations and maps. The illustrations and text are accompanied by many comments and explanations; the book has excellent printing, white offset paper. This edition, like all the books in the “Great Travels” series, will adorn any, even the most sophisticated library, and will be a wonderful gift for both young readers and discerning bibliophiles.
