Death in Persia is an unfinished, posthumously published novel by the Swiss writer, journalist and photographer, one of the eccentric stars of the Weimar era, Annemarie Schwarzenbach (1908–1942). An extraordinary, sometimes surrealistic narrative, seasoned with fever and opium intoxication, matches the personality of Schwarzenbach herself. The author immerses the reader in his experiences of loneliness and hopelessness, doomed love and departure from Europe engulfed by World War II, while simultaneously describing a journey through the enchanting expanses of Persia, which captivated her so much. Wandering around a foreign country in search of her place in a world that does not accept her “otherness,” Schwarzenbach constantly thinks about death, which, like the heroine of this book, tirelessly follows on her heels.
