An ordinary employee from Baltimore, America, has always dreamed of sea travel. Having bought a small yacht with a friend and enlisted the support of a local museum, Gilbert Clingel organized a scientific expedition to explore the deserted islands of the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Yucatan. But the friends never reached their destination. Their boat crashed on the reefs of the Bahamas. Having reached the shore, amateur naturalists decided not to cancel the expedition, but simply change the object of study. Living in a dilapidated hut, they explore the island, smashing their feet on rocks, climbing into caves with bats and swimming around the reef in the company of sharks. Despite all the difficulties of the journey, a few years later Clingel returned to the island to continue his research. The diaries of two expeditions formed the basis of this book.
