In a kingdom engulfed in civil war, there is no weapon more desirable than magic. The last royal magician dies under strange circumstances, but manages to dispose of the Gift: he leaves it to the simple girl Sharka. The king, deprived of the Gift and its power, and the rebels, who are not averse to having such weapons with them, begin the hunt for the newly-made witch. Everything is used: brute force and cunning lies. The fate of the entire kingdom is in the hands of an illiterate commoner, who for others has always been just a dumb thing. And Sharka herself, embroiled in the magician’s plans, has to fight for her freedom and life. Which side will Sharka choose? Will the magician's plan be revealed to her, will she follow it - or will she finally hear her own behind the voices of others?
